Relearn Variable summerschool 2014

Good news! Considering how well last years OSP Relearn Summer School went, we're reiterating and extending the school with all of the people and labs that make up Variable. We're really exited to be able to make this happen again, especially considering all the extra people that will be joining in this year. Relearn starts on July 6th (Sunday) and ends 11 July (Friday). You might have received some of this info by email already, so here is an overview of what we're attempting to do:

Relearn is a summerschool with as many teachers as it has participants. It is about sharing and trying Free Culture practices, and is entirely done with Free, Libre and Open Source software.
It starts from the idea that tools are increasingly mediated by software and the algorithmic and legal dynamics that constraint and shape its use.
Reconnecting to the physical and digital material of those tools is a means of (re)asserting ownership and ensuring active participation in the future of our work practices.

Relearn welcomes participants — artists, students, teachers, practitioners — from all ages and disciplines.

The Master Media Design & Communication: Networked Media is internationally known as the new media study programme at the Piet Zwart Institute. We offer a Master programme focused on a critical engagement with the culture of the Internet and computer media, their artistic design, technology and theory. We are a small, English-taught, two-year full-time Master course with a multidisciplinary community and have a strong emphasis on personal contact and collaboration. Our students, faculty members and guests come, among others, from the USA, France, Serbia, Italy, Austria, Pakistan, Turkey, and our 24/7 studio facilities allow you to make our school your workplace.

We offer a challenging programme with trimestrial thematic projects, theoretical discussions and technical sessions. Next to studying networked media through practice and theoretical research, you will share select courses and group critiques with Lens-based Media staff and students. Bauhaus meets F/LOSS

Taking it's inspiration from the Bauhaus Vorkurs ((Itten, Johannes. Design and form: the basic course at the Bauhaus. New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold)), Xtine Burrough and Michael Mandiberg wrote Digital Foundations ((http://www.blog.digital-foundations.net)), a textbook for teaching software to designers and artists. Their idea was to not just talk about which button to click, but to connect technical training to color theory and composition. After publisher New Riders had been convinced to apply a Creative Commons license to the book ((HOWTO Negotiate a Creative Commons License: Ten Steps http://www.blog.digital-foundations.net/?p=53)), it was only a matter of time before the F/LOSS manuals community ((http://www.flossmanuals.net)) took up the challenge and rewrote Digital Foundations for Gimp, Inkscape, Scribus and other Libre Graphics tools.

Originally, this book was printed as a manual to the Adobe Creative Suite, the software found in classrooms and labs around the country. Just a month after the book was published, we teamed up with Floss Manuals to convert our manuscript into one that teaches the same design principles using open source software.

In addition to explaining well-known Bauhaus principles such as 'simultaneous contrast' and 'quality contrast', the authors have mixed in snippets from art history, post-modern philosophy, an introduction to fair use and net-art plus more to spice up their detailed step-by-step software exercises. Even though the book was published a few years ago, if you are teaching or learning F/LOSS: this is a nice place to start!

For the second day of the Royal College of Art workshop we paid homage to Eric Gill's typographic work. What better place than London to revisit his classic Gill Sans.

We worked from several different sources and ended up creating three very unique versions of Gill Sans. The first version was generated by vectorizing a bitmap specimen of the digital version of the monotype Gill Sans. For the second version we used early sketches of the typeface made by Gill (see image). Finally we took advantage of the letterpress workshop at the Royal College and we printed a specimen from the original lead font.

The three versions of RCA Guilt Sans were made using Gimp, Fonzie and Fontforge.

A day before the international Libre Graphics Meeting starts, art/design students and their teachers are welcome to join LG-school for an intense day. LG-school looks at what Free Software could mean for teaching, learning, experimenting and making creative work.

The day starts with an introduction on why Free Software could be interesting for designers and artists, followed by hands-on parallel sessions. The day ends with a plenary discussion moderated by Pierre Huyghebaert and Femke Snelting. We'll share experiences with each other and with Free Software developers already arriving in Brussels for the Libre Graphics Meeting.

At LG-school we will speak mainly English and some French and Dutch; the discussion has simultaneous translation in French.

Among the 100 people involved in the creation and realisation of this poster, OSP.
2 of them are hidden in the picture (free poster for the one who spot them) and 3 other helped the setup...
This poster was done during the first year graphic design course at ERG, Brussels.
This course has been commissionned by Radio Panik to design the poster of their annual (and legendary) party.
Panik is a Brussels associative radio, one of the last of the real Free Radio. It is a fresh and colorfull wind in the grey landscape of commercial broadcast.

Everything on the poster is done by hand.
It can be cut in 49 different flyers, as the verso is printed with infos for the evening (line up, logos...). Once cut, the poster becomes a gigantic puzzle...
Back is done in Scribus, with handrawings processed in Gimp.

Turning around practises

A month ago I decided to do the step. Doing a partition on my computer forced me to cynically erase all my data. Since Mac OSX Tiger did not provide any kind of Bootcamp assistant (it was exclusively held for Leopard) and executing partitions through the Terminal was not really pleased by my system, I was forced to reinstall my whole system. That means installing Leopard, doing a partition and finally installing Ubuntu. Summarized it sounds quiet easy.

So the adventure started after having installed Ubuntu. Scribus was my hope for the toolkit that I had to make for little kids. . Although it takes illogical twists from time to time, it is does bare possibilities. Exporting to pdf did pass through some problems. Exporting a dashed hairline for instance is impossible. It keeps it as a hairline unless you make it 0,3 mm. Which is almost a hairline... Some funny twists.

Completing my task for a Boektegoed through open source software was a challenge. Being so used to use your computer through patterns of habits, it was quiet an experience. Turning around practises, un bouleversement qui est inévitable.

Parsons school of design teaches webdesign for and with open source software. Students learn to work with indexhibit and wordpress asking questions such as: How do we learn and how can we teach through interface? What is the role of design in the open source world? And how can we give back to this new collaborative movement?

On the day he was named as president of RISD, John Maeda launched an internal blog on which everyone there can talk openly to him about the school. Maeda addressed the moral responsibility of designers. He stressed the importance of transparency in design, and of extending the participatory "open source" development process now popular in software design to other sectors. He maintained that although keeping secrets creates the illusion of power, if nobody knows you have a secret, its value is worthless.

Wednesday May 7 in Wrocław, Poland

Running up to the Libre Graphics meeting 2008, OSP invites designers, programmers and typographers to work on a collaborative design project. Inspired by modular systems for road sign lettering, and a long interest in fonts designed by engineers, we would like to work with you on an impossible project: to design a whole alphabet in a day.

How do you 'make things' across styles, tastes and traditions? Does it always mean to average differences or a sampling of parts? How do you design through translation? What will be lost and what could be gained?

Depending on the needs and interests of the participants, we form small working groups that are each joined by one or more OSP members. For inspiration or as actual source material, we will photograph as many characters as possible on our roadtrip from Brussels to Wroclaw. Each of the groups adopts a few letters to experiment with, using free software tools (Gimp, Inkscape, Fontforge + some Spiro flavor...) to draw, digitize and transform. At the end of the day we will gather all glyphs into one font and festively release the collection under an Open Font License.

Due to my recent task of teaching typography, I was looking around for courses and experiences in that domain. This drove me to Ellen Lupton's website, teacher at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA): www.designwritingresearch.org. There, in an impressive generosity, you can consult her current syllabi and exercices of hight quality courses.

She's is also a responsive designers awared of the problematic of proprietary fonts in design. Her website host a free font manifesto page: http://www.designwritingresearch.org/free_fonts.html

Lupton wrote several books on teaching typography. The manual "thinking with type" is a reference in the field. This book is accompanied by a rich teaching website: thinkingwithtype.com which gives number of exercices and "adaptative" syllabus.
